Alfrocheiro , often also Alfrocheiro Preto, is an autochthonous red wine variety that is mainly found in the DOC Dão ( Portugal ) .
origin
Autochthonous red wine from Portugal. It was mentioned by Coelho Seabra in 1791. According to DNA analysis, it is genetically closely related to the varieties 'Carrasquín', 'Prieto Picudo' and 'Bastardo' ('Bastardo').

In Dão , the Alfrocheiro Preto is the most important red wine variety . But also in other parts of the country, for example in the Alentejo , Bairrada and Ribatejo , it is often used as a cuvée partner in many wines because of its strong color and density . In 2010 the area under cultivation in Portugal was 1,180 ha. Under the synonym Baboso Negro, it is also cultivated in the Canary Islands (Spain).
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
- The leaves are medium to strong five-lobed. The blade is barely toothed.
- The grape is long and dense.

properties
The variety sprouts late, is very productive and sensitive to gray mold rot and powdery mildew .
Wine
Single-variety wines are brightly colored, fruity fresh red wines or rosé wines with a bouquet of red fruits such as cherries and strawberries. On the palate, they are powerful, dense and with fine fruity and spicy accents. As a rule, the wines are intended for quick enjoyment.
