The Ziegenberg is a nature reserve in the towns of Mansfeld in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz and Harzgerode in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0079 is 25.79  hectares . Of this, 17.66 hectares are in the Mansfeld-Südharz district and 8.13 hectares in the Harz district. The nature reserve is congruent with the FFH area “Ziegenberg bei Königerode” and lies within the landscape protection area “Harz und Vorländer”. The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Mansfeld-Südharz and Harz.

The two-part nature reserve is located south of the Harzgeroder district of Königerode and west of the Mansfeld district of Braunschwende in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve (Mansfelder Land) . It places near-natural sessile oak and hornbeam forests under protection at their altitude limit in the Harz Mountains . In the southern, larger part of the nature reserve, the forest communities falter on the plateau of the approximately 371.2 meter high Ziegenberg as well as the steep slope that slopes down to the valley of the Schmalen Wipper and is mainly exposed to the south. In the northern, smaller part of the nature reserve, this includes part of the plateau of the 390.7 meter high Wendeberg.

The forest communities on the upper slope of the goat mountain represent themselves as sessile oak-hornbeam forest with field maple and service tree . The herb layer is u. a. made up of bouquet-flowered usury , cowslip and peach-leaved bellflower . On the scree-rich steep slopes of the Ziegenberg there is a log forest with norway maple and winter linden . Common hazel , red honeysuckle and alpine currant can be found in the shrub layer . The herb layer is formed by forest ragweed , common potted fern and brown-stalked striped fern . At the foot of the slope of the Schmalen Wipper there is an angular sedge-ash forest with common snowball , antiperspirant milkweed and bitter foam herb .

On the plateau of the Wendeberg there is beech-rich forest rennet, grape oak and hornbeam forest. The herb layer here is mainly formed by mesophilic species such as hazel root , liverwort and Turkish lily .

The forests of the nature reserve are u. a. Habitat for cave breeders such as stock dove , gray and medium woodpecker .
