geography

The place is in the Lower Harz, between the Einetal and the Wippertal directly on the B 242 . The nearby expressways are the A 36 , A 38 and A 14 motorways .

Königerode can be reached in local transport by bus lines of the Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe . The closest airport for international air traffic is Magdeburg-Cochstedt .

At the end of the village in the direction of Dankerode is the Mönchsteich, which can be used for swimming in summer. Due to its relaxing location on the edge of the forest with large meadows, it invites many visitors to swim, hike and relax in the summer months. This is also popular with anglers due to its large, mixed fish population.

history

The village church of Königerode

The later emperor Otto III. On January 6, 992, allowed the Walbeck court to be transferred to the Servatiusstift in Quedlinburg for the purpose of founding a nunnery . Among the possessions Walbecks also is Cuninggarod mentioned. This is the first mention of the place. The naming was probably made by a person named Kunibert or Kunigunde . The deserts of Schneblingen and Rodersdorf to the east of Königerode were also mentioned in this document .

From about 1225 to 1400 the place belonged to Anhalt . In 1400, Königerode was given as a dowry by Margarethe von Anhalt when she married Albrecht VI. von Mansfeld part of the county of Mansfeld , and in 1506 Königerode was assigned to the Mansfeld office of Rammelburg . In 1579 the overlordship fell over the Amt of Rammelburg to the Electorate of Saxony , and in 1602 it was pledged to Kaspar von Berlepsch .

In the period from 1708 to 1715, the County of Mansfeld was pledged with all sovereign rights to the Electorate of Hanover . In 1722 the office of Rammelburg was passed on to the Baron von Friesen . From 1807 to 1813 Königerode belonged under Napoleonic occupation of the canton Wippra in the Kingdom of Westphalia and in 1816 to 1944 Mansfeld Mountain District in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Prussian province of Saxony .

After two months of occupation by American troops in 1945, Königerode was under the military administration of the Red Army in the Soviet occupation zone .

In April 1950 the Mansfeld mountain range was dissolved. After a referendum , the majority of residents decided to move to the Quedlinburg district, which means that Königerode belongs to the Halle district.

In 1992 the millennium was celebrated with a week of festivities and a parade.

On August 1, 2009, the municipality of Königerode merged with the towns of Güntersberge and Harzgerode and the communities of Dankerode , Schielo , Siptenfelde and Straßberg to form the new town of Harzgerode.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on November 11, 1993 by the Magdeburg Regional Council.

Blazon : "In the golden shield with a green shield base, in which there is inclined golden lifting hooks , there is a green linden tree with a black trunk."

It may have been around the year 900 when around nine to eleven landless peasant sons from the western regions of Germany, which at that time did not yet exist, set out to clear the primeval forest in the sparsely populated Lower Harz and create a new livelihood. The symbol of the crossed hoes indicates this event. The tradition of agriculture and forestry is still evident today.

The leader of these farmer's sons must have been called Cuno, because the new clearing settlement was called "Cuningarod" to distinguish it from similar facilities. This place name can be found for the first time in a document issued by the twelve-year-old king and later emperor Otto III. in the year 992. Over the course of time, the former Cuningarod developed into today's town of Königerode.

The linden tree in the coat of arms is to be understood as a court linden tree . This judicial linden was in earlier years on the property of the Rausche family and was mentioned many times in local history.

The colors of the municipality of Königerode are green and gold (yellow).

The Heraldic Society "Black Lion" Leipzig designed the coat of arms and registered it in the Quedlinburg coat of arms QWR II / 90020 on April 22, 1990.

Leisure and club life

The large village community center is a popular event location in the village, is often used by local restaurateurs for events on the weekends and offers space for around 250 to 500 people.

Every year on Walpurgis Night, the witch association "Frei & Gesetzlos" eV, which celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2015, rings in the spring on the fairground. The association takes care of the maintenance of traditions and customs in the village, including the children and young people.

The Nikolausverein e. V. is a non-profit association that visits local institutions on December 6th every year and gives small gifts to children and older people. On the 1st of Advent this association organizes the traditional “Nikolausmarkt” on the square at the bus stop, with mulled wine and the traditional “boot bread”. Admission to this association is only possible if you have the first name "Klaus". The association is mainly supported by donations from local traders.

Other associations are the riding and driving association, the brass band, the hunters' leaseholder association, the support association of the volunteer fire brigade, friends of nature and the poultry association. The sports club "RotWeiß" offers the sports of youth and leisure football, table tennis, women's gymnastics and volleyball.
