Carl Samuel Leberecht Hermann (born January 20, 1765 in Königerode , Harz, † September 1, 1846 in Schönebeck an der Elbe ) was a German pharmacist and chemical manufacturer.

life and work

After completing his pharmaceutical training in Halberstadt in 1792, Hermann took over the pharmacy in Groß Salze near Magdeburg . When examining the waste from the royal saltworks at Schönebeck, he realized that this waste could serve as a raw material for chemical products. From 1794 on, Hermann and his company Hermania used this waste to extract potassium and magnesium salts and hydrochloric acid. He was the first to introduce the Leblanc process for the production of soda in Germany . Hermann discovered the element cadmium (Cd) in 1817 independently and almost simultaneously with the German chemist Friedrich Stromeyer (1776–1835 ). In contrast to Stromeyer, however, he did not make this discovery in zinc carbonate , but in the analysis of zinc oxide .
