Friedrich Stromeyer
Friedrich Stromeyer (born August 2, 1776 in Göttingen , † August 18, 1835 in Göttingen) was a German chemist .
life and work
He was the son of the Göttingen medical professor Ernst Johann Friedrich Stromeyer (1750-1830) and his wife Marie Magdalena Johanne von Blum (1756-1848).
Stromeyer studied medicine in Göttingen from 1793 to 1799 . In 1800 he received his doctorate in this field. From 1801 to 1802 he went to France and Switzerland. In France he visited Vauquelin , Thenard and Gay-Lussac . After his return he worked as a private lecturer.
He was Friedrich Wöhler's predecessor as professor of chemistry at the University of Göttingen . He became an associate professor in 1805 and first introduced a chemical internship for students in 1805. In 1810 he became a full professor. In 1817 he discovered the chemical element cadmium .
Stromeyer analyzed and described many minerals, so among other things, for the first time Eudialyt and the aragonite , calcite (Iceland spar, calcite), Aluminite , magnesite , Pikropharmakolith (Picropharmacolit), polyhalite , Vulpinit (variety of anhydrite ) Strontianit , Celestine , barite ( Schwerspat) and others, documented in volume 1 of his work "Investigations on the mixture of mineral bodies and other related substances" published by Vandenhoeck and Ruprecht in 1821.

He married Luise Ludewig (born September 29, 1777, † September 17, 1850). The couple had several children:

Friedrich Stromeyer Prize
The Friedrich Stromeyer Prize , named after Stromeyer and endowed with 3000 euros , is donated by Merck , Darmstadt, and is presented annually by the chemistry class of the Society of German Chemists .
