geography

Dankerode lies in the Lower Harz at a height of 420 m above sea level. To the south of the village the Marktal flows into the Wippertal . Dankerode can be reached from Bundesstraße 242 via Königerode or from Neudorf . The regional bus route 254 of the Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe runs on this and connects the town with Harzgerode. Dankerode is surrounded by meadows and forests in all directions.

history

Dankerode was first mentioned in a document on January 6, 992 as Thensciararod as a donation to the recently founded Benedictine monastery of Walbeck. 1397 enfeoffed Count Bernhard III. von Anhalt Hermann von Zehlingen with Tammekerode . Since the middle of the 15th century, Dankerode appears as a community that is divided between two gentlemen in terms of its taxes and services, although not by an internal border. In 1452, Prince Bernhard IV of Anhalt, as feudal lord, authorized the Lords of Hoym to pledge income, including half of the village of Dankerode, to Count Botho zu Stolberg . In 1478 the parish of Tamekerode belonged to the Asseburgers, who were enfeoffed by the Halberstadt bishops with the old county of Falkenstein . With the Principality of Halberstadt, Asseburg-Falkenstein and thus half of Dankerode fell to Brandenburg after the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 , and from 1701 Kingdom of Prussia . The Stolberg share was incorporated into the Bärenrode office in 1531, which was pledged to the Lords of Hoym in 1576, and fell to Anhalt as a pledge in 1585. From 1635 to 1709 the former Stolberg portion of Dankerode belonged to the Principality of Anhalt-Harzgerode and after its abolition it came to the County of Stolberg-Roßla.

In 1533 59 families lived in Dankerode. In 1617, 67 taxable and four tax-free houses were listed. After the Thirty Years' War, 55 houses were still inhabited by 235 people. By 1750 the number of inhabitants grew to 640. After a healing spring was developed in 1728, the Atzenschwender Brunnen, the place briefly gained a reputation as a health well beyond the Harz Mountains .

From 1815 to 1950 Dankerode belonged to the Mansfeld Mountain District and after its dissolution to the Quedlinburg District , with which it was finally integrated into the Harz District . The town had 950 inhabitants in 1935, their number rose to 1252 by 1950 and decreased to 710 by 2016.

In 1999 Dankerode received the title "State Recognized Resort", which in 2015 recorded 4,139 overnight stays. The producer of insulation materials, Swisspor Deutschland GmbH, is the only industrial company in the area.

On August 1, 2009, the community of Dankerode merged with the towns of Güntersberge and Harzgerode and the communities of Königerode , Schielo , Siptenfelde and Straßberg to form the new town of Harzgerode.
