Bernhard IV., Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg († June 28, 1354 ) was a ruling Anhalt sovereign from the Ascanians .

Life

He was the eldest son of Bernhard III. von Anhalt-Bernburg and Agnes, daughter of Rudolf I, Duke of Saxony-Wittenberg .

Although the principle of dividing inheritance was common in the Anhalt family, Bernhard succeeded his father in 1348 as sole regent of the principality of Anhalt-Bernburg .

Possible marriage

It has not been clearly established whether Bernhard was married to Beatrix (* September 1, 1339 , † July 25, 1399 ), a daughter of Friedrich II. Landgrave of Thuringia and Margrave of Meissen . It is more likely that although he was engaged to her, the marriage did not materialize due to his untimely death. Beatrix spent the rest of her life in the monastery and later became abbess of the Poor Clare Monastery in Seusslitz , where she lived between 1363 and 1399.

Bernhard IV died without descendants, which is why his brother Heinrich IV followed him in the reign.
