The Alte Burg is a nature reserve in the town of Ballenstedt in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0068 is 41.79  hectares . It is part of the EU bird sanctuary "Northeastern Unterharz" and to a large extent from the conservation area surrounded "resin and flood plains". The area has been under protection since 1967 (date of regulation: September 11, 1967). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located south of the Ballenstedt district of Rieder and east of the Quedlinburg district of Stadt Gernrode in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve . It places a forest area under protection, which is largely occupied by pine forests. Silver birch , sessile oak , hornbeam and red beech grow between the pines and indicate a development towards the typical local forest communities of the hornbeam and red beech forest and woodruff red beech forest. In the herbaceous layer to grow melica uniflora and Real chickweed . In the west of the protected area there is a steep slope exposed to the west . Here diabase with only slight soil formation come to light. In the area of ​​the steep slope, the forest communities merge into privet - sloe bushes , which are followed by semi-dry and dry lawns . The semi-dry lawns are designed as fusilage, pinnate twigs, semi-dry lawns with small meadow buttons and common sun rose on loess-covered plateaus, the dry lawns as fiber umbrella-dwarf sedge-dry lawns with earth sedge and branchless grass lily . Sand thyme and blue fescue dry grass with blue-green bedstraw , sand fingerwort , mountain leek and real feather grass has settled on smaller rock platforms in the steep walls . The common coton grows in places in the dry grass areas.

The forests in the area of ​​the nature reserve are the habitat of numerous bird species . Around 60 breeding bird species were found here, including all native woodpecker species.

The nature reserve is surrounded by farm roads. This is followed by further forests to the south and east, and grassland areas to the north . A power line runs through the nature reserve .
