Teufelsmauer and Bode northeast of Thale is a nature reserve in the town of Thale in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0064 is around 198  hectares . The towering rock formations in the nature reserve also form the approximately 18 hectare FFH area "Teufelsmauer north Thale". The Bode and part of its bank areas in the nature reserve are part of the approximately 276 hectare FFH area "Bode and Selke in the Harz foreland". The nature reserve, which become part of the conservation area surrounded "resin and flood plains," is since 2011 under protection (date of the Regulation: December 22, 2011). It replaces the “Teufelsmauer” nature reserve, which was designated in 1935. The earlier quarrying of rock on the Teufelsmauer , which dates back to at least the late 16th century, was prohibited as early as the middle of the 19th century. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Thale in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It turns out the Cretaceous - Sandstone existing rock formations as a central part of the Devil's Wall with the adjacent sand neglected grassland and dry grassland , parts of the mill mountain and a section of the Bode with their shore areas under protection.

The rock formations of the Teufelsmauer have been created since the end of the cold time of the Saale by exposing a steeply erected stratum rib . They are only populated by isolated pioneer vegetation and lichens . At the foot of the rocks, pioneering societies of blue fescue silvergrass sand lean lawn with straw flower , common cat's paw and sagebrush as well as small areas of sandy grass with former oat wreaths have been developed. Downslope close to sunny locations diverse Grasnelken- Raublattschwingel -Sandmagerrasen with Ohrlöffelleimkraut , Mountain sand bells , Rispenflockenblume , Genuine sheep fescue , Big Knorpellattich and Breckland Thyme on. In north exposed locations to plant of the spurge and broom Heather include heath with Genuine meadow oats , dainty Schiller grass and three teeth on. Soils with loess circulation are of Walliserschwingel- Haarpfriemengras -Trockenrasen with Erdsegge and on the northern lower slopes of Devil's Wall of Mädesüß- meadow oats -Magerrasen with quaking grass , Carthusian Elke and Steppensegge populated. In more profound floors at the Devil's Wall and on the Muhlenberg grow Furchenschwingel- Fiederzwenken -Halbtrockenrasen with to Danish tragacanth , Sichelblättrigem Hasenohr and Erdsegge and Eryngium Campestre , hill Meier , Gray Skabiose and Ophrys Apifera . On the Mühlenberg there are also occurrences of dry limestone grass. The only occurrence of the noble gamander in the northern Harz foreland is located here . Some areas on the Mühlenberg are covered with bushes. Dense bushes of blackthorn and other thorn bushes grow here .

On loess settled and pioneer vegetation of Silver Birch , Common Ash , maple and hazelnut , so that in places Entkusselungsmaßnahmen for holding open the dry lawns and the rock feet are performed. At times, parts of the nature reserve were grazed with sheep for care. Arable land is included in the nature reserve, on the edges of which arable wild herbs such as yellow günsel and toothed lamb's lettuce grow.

In the nature reserve there are individual orchards with different types of sweet cherries . These were laid out in 1922 in the times of crisis after the First World War to provide the community of Weddersleben with self- sufficiency with fruit and were subsequently cultivated. Various types of sweet cherries were replanted from 1954 to 1956 after tree care and pest control had been neglected during and after the Second World War. Further replanting took place in 1984, 1985 and 1992. Until 1989 the orchards were regularly tended. In the meantime, decussing measures are necessary here to avoid bush encroachment, since the orchards are no longer cultivated.

Along the Bode in the south of the reserve are Hochstaudenfluren , Glanzgras- reedbeds to find and bushes. Hybrid poplar forest grows on the north bank, developing into a riparian forest dominated by black alder , common ash, sycamore maple and common bird cherry . Flooding water crowfoot grows in the Bode with its changing sand and gravel banks and a natural variety of substrates with coarse blocks up to fine sand .

In the different habitats in the nature reserve different coming birds , including owls , black kite , red kite , peregrine falcon , black woodpecker , gray woodpecker , gray heron , turncoat , backed Shrike , Meadow Pipit , Gray Wagtail and Wheatear , along the Bode also dippers and kingfishers , several species of bats , including Barbastelle , Large mouse-eared , mosquito bat , common pipistrelle , noctule , Daubenton's bat , Brandt's bat , Natterer's bat , brown long-eared , serotine , Gray long-eared , whiskered bat and lesser noctule who use the area of the poplar's forest or the rocks of devil's wall for hunting or for quarters and the grasshopper Western Snake before. Butterflies are z. B. represented by swallowtail and sail butterfly . Furthermore, hamster , toad , Kreuzkröte , Zauneidechse and Schlingnatter in the area at home. The Bode offers u. a. Brook lamprey and bullhead and sensitive insect species , including various stone flies , habitat.

Several hiking trails run through the nature reserve, including a section of the Teufelmauer-Stieg and a circular hiking trail. There are display and information boards in several places along the paths. The area is also used for local recreation . A visitor guidance system is in place to protect the area. The nature reserve borders mainly on agricultural areas . In the north it is bordered by a quartz sand pit.
