The Okertal is a nature reserve in the town of Osterwieck in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve bears the registration number NSG0171. It is 82 hectares and is part of the FFH area "Ecker- und Okertal". To the west it borders on the nature reserve “ Oker and Eckertal in the districts of Goslar and Wolfenbüttel ” in Lower Saxony . The area has been a nature reserve since 1997.

The nature reserve is located west of the Osterwieck districts of Göddeckerode and Wülperode between the Lower Saxony towns of Vienenburg and Schladen . It is bounded to the north, west and south by the state border with Lower Saxony. To the east, the nature reserve extends to the former Kolonnenweg along the former inner-German border .

The reserve represents a section of the river course of the Oker and part of the valley under protection. In the nature reserve, the Oker presents itself as a near-natural, meandering and fast flowing river course with gravel banks. In the lowland area there are flood troughs and oxbow lakes . The river accompany a mosaic of lowland forest residues, Hochstaudenfluren and floriferous gravel fields and heavy metal-influenced river gravel - poor grasslands and meadows companies.

Since the area lies in the area of ​​the border area, which was inaccessible at the time of the German division , it has developed into a habitat for numerous protected and endangered animal and plant species. In the nature reserve u. a. Sandpiper , ringed plover , sand martin , lapwing and Kingfisher as breeding birds before. There is an inland occurrence of the middle saw in the Okertal . In the Oker are u. a. Brown trout , minnow and three-spined stickleback are native.

Reed societies are widespread . On dry land, u. a. Common wind stalk , white goose foot and hairy button weed . In silting zones in oxbow lakes of the Oker are u. a. Marsh iris , broad-leaved cattail , brook bungee , swan flower , shield water crowfoot and branched hedgehog .

The heavy metal gravel is covered with numerous lichens . Also come here u. a. Haller's carnation , spring chickweed and Haller's foam cabbage , on heavily grassed heavy metal lawns also bristle grass , red ostrich grass and real sheep fescue .

To the east, agricultural areas adjoin the nature reserve.
