“The Büchenberg tunnel system near Elbingerode ” is the name of a nature reserve in the towns of Oberharz am Brocken and Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt . It is approximately 147  hectares in size and completely from the landscape conservation area resin and flood plains surrounded. Parts of the protected area belong to the roughly 160 hectare FFH area of ​​the same name .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0392 has been under protection since September 21, 2012. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district .

location

The nature reserve is located north of Elbingerode in a mining area in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It borders the federal highway 244 in the northeast .

The mining, which lasted from the late Middle Ages to the 1970s, created an extensive system of cavities underground , which is often connected to the surface through mouth holes and shafts . The beech forests are pronounced as grove and woodruff beech forest. The alluvial forests are characterized in particular by black alder and common ash . fauna

The nature reserve is of great importance for various bats , which use the tunnels as winter and swarming quarters. So here are greater mouse-eared , Noctule , Northern bat , Daubenton's bat , Brandt's bat , Natterer's bat , Barbastelle , brown long-eared and whiskered bat at home. The area is also a habitat for wild cats and eagle owls .
