Waldhaus / Fallstein nature reserve near Osterwieck

The Waldhaus is a nature reserve in the town of Osterwieck in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0030 is 52.08  hectares . It is part of the FFH area "Fallstein area north of Osterwieck" and is completely surrounded by the landscape protection area "Waldgebiet des Fallstein". The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is north of Osterwieck on the southern edge of the Großer Fallstein . It places part of the forest area on the Großer Fallstein under protection. The near-natural forest communities grow on clay , silt and marl stones of the Middle Keuper .

The nature reserve is divided into two erosion valleys. A stratified spring rises in the north of the two valleys . Here the bottom of the valley is soaked. This area is characterized by the species-rich maple-ash-green forest. The tree layer is of Common ash , stalk and Traubeneiche , sycamore maple , hornbeam and beech formed. In the herb layer grow u. a. High cowslip , hollow larkspur , spotted lungwort , wild garlic , yellow monkshood , marsh cork's bill , spotted orchid , spring cup and spotted arum .

Oak and hornbeam forests grow on sun-exposed slopes . Here grow beside grapes oak and hornbeam also pointed chisels and field maple and wild service tree . In the herb layer come u. a. Turkish lily and multi-flowered white root .

Forest barley-beech forest grows on the predominantly flat plateau areas. The forest areas are dominated by the common beech. Sessile oak, hornbeam, winter linden , sycamore maple and common ash also grow here . In the bush layer is u. a. Find common daphne . The herb layer is mainly made up of grasses, mainly forest barley , and liverworts .

The forest area is u. a. Habitat for different bird species . Red kites , buzzards and long-eared owls breed here . Amphibians and reptiles are z. For example, by Erdkröte , grass and edible frog , which occur in the wet layers of the Gründchenwaldes and blindworm and Zauneidechse which are found in the slopes their habitat, represented.

At the edge of the nature reserve there is an approximately 19 meter high Bismarck tower with a viewing platform.
