The nature reserve is located north of Hasselfelde in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature park . It places the Eichenberg with part of its slope areas under protection. In the nature reserve, near-natural, species-rich beech forests and hillside forests grow. Rock sites can also be found. On the plateau of the Eichenberg, Zahnwurz- Buchenwald dominates, with some old red beech trees and a high proportion of common ash . The herb layer is made up of woodruff , multi-flowered white root , forest flutter grass , single-flowered and colored pearl grass , forest equestrian grass , forest panicle , forest sedge , forest barley , perennial ringel and spring pea. This is followed by forest barley and beech forests with sessile oaks . On the northern slope of the Eichenberg, which slopes down to the Rappbodetalsperre , a beech and ash forest with Turkish lily and various ferns stands on the shoulder , which merges into a beech- maple forest with a canyon forest character. Here grow u. a. Asplenium viride , Common Polypody , Asplenium Trichomanes and Fragile bladderfern .

Significant populations of the dormouse live in the nature reserve .

The nature reserve borders on predominantly spruce- dominated forests . In the north, the reserve borders the rocky bank of the Rappbodetalsperre.
