The Grünstielige Spleenwort or Green Spleenwort ( Asplenium viride ) is a fern - type , which, apart from the green stem, the Braunstieligen Spleenwort ( Asplenium trichomanes ) is very similar.
description
The narrow lanceolate fronds of this perennial fern are between 5 and 20 cm long, but mostly about 10 cm. They are simply feathered throughout. The frond axis is green, and at most brown at the bottom. The up to 30 round to broadly ovate leaflets are flat and arranged on one level.
The spores ripen in July or August.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72.
Occurrence
The species is distributed throughout the northern hemisphere in the moderate latitudes (meridional to arctic zone).
It grows in shady and not too dry locations in crevices in limestone rocks or in cracks in calcareous walls. In Central Europe it is quite common in the limestone areas of the Alps and the Alpine foothills. Otherwise it occurs only very sporadically and rarely. In the Allgäu Alps, the species on the Bockkarkopf in Bavaria rises up to 2450 m above sea level. The green-stemmed striped fern is a species of the Cystopteridion association, but also occurs in stony societies of the Tilio-Acerion or Piceion association.
