The Steinköpfe is a nature reserve in the towns of Blankenburg (Harz) and Thale in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0186 is around 620  hectares . It is part of the FFH area "Bodetal and deciduous forests of the Harz border near Thale" and the EU bird protection area "Northeast Lower Harz". The nature reserve is to a large extent from the conservation area surrounded "resin and flood plains". In the southeast it borders on the “ Bodetal ” nature reserve . The area has been under protection since 1998 (date of regulation: November 5, 1998). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located west of Thale and southeast of Blankenburg (Harz) in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It is characterized by near-natural forest communities, rock formations and rock corridors, as well as near-natural flowing waters. The nature reserve includes several mountains, including Krugberg and Steinköpfe, as well as other mountain peaks. Several creek valleys run in between . The main stream flows to the north running Silberbach, a side stream of the Bode .

The forest communities in the nature reserve are predominantly beech forests , which appear as woodruff red beech forests and hornbeam red beech forests . On the sunny upper slopes there are also submontane woods, oak and hornbeam forests with winter linden trees . Furthermore, cinquefoil oak forests and dyer's gorse oak forests with mixed birches can be found.

Umbilical lichen societies and bladder fern societies grow on rocky locations if these are mostly shaded. Turf stone breaker societies settle at the foot of rubble heaps. There are several abandoned quarries in the nature reserve , which are important as secondary biotopes .

The nature reserve is u. a. Habitat of the middle woodpecker , wildcat , dormouse , adder , forest lizard and in the streams of brown trout and various mayflies and stone flies .

State road 93 runs through the nature reserve. The nature reserve can be experienced via several hiking trails.
