features

The panicle knapweed grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of about 30 to 120 centimeters. It forms pinnate, linear leaves which, like the entire plant, are covered with small, white-gray shimmering hairs .

The individual flowers are in a paniculate, heaped head, which is ovoid. The five-nerved bracts have characteristic dark brown colored, frayed appendages, which, however, are often changeable. The petals are reddish-purple in color. The pollination is done by insects or self-pollination. The flowering period extends from June to August.

The achene fruit is only 3 to 5 mm long. The reduced pappus is usually no larger than 0.5 mm. The achenes have a Velcro effect and can, for example, stick to the fur of animals, but they are also spread by the wind.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 36.
