The Kirschberg and Handkante is a nature reserve in the towns of Sangerhausen and Allstedt in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0176 is around 37  hectares in size. It has been under protection since 1998 (March 25, 1998). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Mansfeld-Südharz.

The nature reserve, which consists of two parts - the Kirschberg in Sangerhausen and the Handkante in Allstedt - is located southeast of Sangerhausen. It places parts of a narrow valley with the adjacent steep slopes under protection. The brook (sometimes also referred to as the “Einzinger Bach”) runs through the valley area of ​​the “Kirschberg” sub-area and the southern part of the “Handkante” sub-area, the basin of which is also located there.

The steep slopes could only be used extensively and in the past served as sheep pastures and orchards . Today, furrow wings - pinnate twigs - semi-dry lawns , etc. a. with stemless thistle , large schiller grass, spring Adonis , fringed gentian , Carthusian carnation and cowslip . The meadow cowslip can be found in large numbers. On the upper slope edges there are small areas of meadowsweet - meadow oat communities with common heather . The orchards have a high proportion of dead wood .

In the area of the source basin of Bach as a wet, anmooriger area dominated reeds on a angelica - carbon Thistle - meadow . Alders and ash trees and pollarded willows can be found alongside the stream .

The nature reserve is the habitat of various bird species , including red kite , buzzard , little owl , small woodpecker , wood pigeon , reversible neck , red- backed killer , nightingale , garden warbler and field owl . Furthermore, the species-rich meadows in the nature reserve are the habitat of numerous insects , including butterflies such as the great fox and common piebald and grasshoppers such as the little heather grasshopper. The reed areas provide habitat for the pygmy shrew and harvest mouse . The nature reserve is also a retreat for brown hare and badger .

The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . The sub-area "Handkante" borders in the north on a dirt road west of Othal and in the south on the village of Einzingen , the sub-area "Kirschberg" borders in the south on the 332 meter long valley bridge, Einzinger Bach of the federal highway 38 . With the “ Hopptal ” nature reserve to the west, it represents a biotope network in an otherwise cleared agricultural landscape .
