The Steinberg is a nature reserve in the town of Hettstedt in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0076 is 39.43  hectares . It is completely part of the approximately 103 hectare FFH area "Langes Holz and Steinberg west of Hettstedt". The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Mansfeld-Südharz.

The nature reserve is located west of Hettstedt in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park (Mansfelder Land) . It places a near-natural sessile oak and hornbeam forest on the eponymous Steinberg under protection. Old sessile oaks and red beeches , some of which date from the early 19th century, grow in the forest area . In addition to the predominant oaks and beeches, lime trees , sycamore maple and common bird cherry and service tree grow in the nature reserve. Niederwald occurs on a small scale . Field elm occurs at the forest edges .

The very lush shrub layer of the forest area is primarily formed by common hazel , two-pronged hawthorn and red honeysuckle . The characteristic species of golden nettle , real star chickweed , nodding pearl grass , forest labwort , liverwort , real lungwort , spiky devil's claw and forest ziest grow in the herb layer . Special features of the herb layer are the Turkish lily and sweet milkweed . On less nutrient-poor locations, snakeskin and whitish grove determine the herb layer.

The nature reserve is almost completely surrounded by agricultural land . In the south it borders on the Meisberg district of Hettstedt .
