It is part of the approximately 57 hectare FFH area “Reeds and salt marshes on the Süßen See” and is part of the landscape protection area “Süsser See; Sweet and Salty Lake ”. The area has been under protection since 1995 (date of regulation: May 15, 1995). It replaces the earlier nature reserve designated September 11, 1967. The bank areas are largely occupied by wet meadows and reed beds , the vegetation of which is characterized by salty spring and pressure water . On the wet meadows, characteristic salt plant communities with samphire , beach aster , salt swaths and salt muds could develop. The characteristic salt marsh vegetation is only preserved on the small salt marsh in the eastern part of the nature reserve, while in the area of the large salt marsh in the western part of the nature reserve, the salt vegetation has been replaced by reeds or brackish reeds . On the lake side, large reed areas adjoin the meadow and reed areas.

The reed areas are the habitat of various warbler species as well as the marsh harrier , bittern , bunting , bearded tit and water rail . Numerous amphibians and dragonflies can also be found in the nature reserve. Furthermore spawns here threatened in its existence ruffe .
