The brook valleys in the Upper Harz around Braunlage are a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Braunlage and the non-parish Harz region in the Goslar district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 081 is almost 446 hectares. A large part of it is also designated as an FFH area of ​​the same name . As part of a revision of the nature reserve ordinance, which came into force on May 24, 2018, the originally 393 hectare nature reserve was expanded to its present size. Here, the nature reserve "are parts Wurmberg " and the Protected Landscape "resin (district of Goslar)" seen in the nature reserve.

In the north and west the nature reserve borders partly on the Harz National Park , in the north also on the nature reserve "Wurmberg". In the east it goes into the nature reserve " Harzer Bachtäler " in Saxony-Anhalt area. The nature reserve is largely surrounded by the "Harz (district of Goslar)" nature reserve. The area has been a nature reserve since June 2, 1989. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Goslar.

The widely ramified nature reserve lies to a large extent east and south of Braunlage, but also includes areas north of Braunlage. Parts of the nature reserve extend over the Green Belt Germany in the area of ​​the former inner-German border . The area includes the lower reaches of the Warmen Bode , the Bremke in Lower Saxony as well as most of the Kleine Bremke, the Großer Goldbach, the Brunnenbach , the Großer Kronenbach, the Schächerbach, the Petersilienwassers and the Ebersbach with their valley areas as well as some adjacent areas. The streams are mostly close to nature with meanders , steep and flat banks and sand and gravel banks . Old arms are partially formed. In the spring swamps and bogs of the brooks, sedges and transitional and swinging turf bogs occur . The streams are often accompanied by forest communities, which are characterized as semi-natural alluvial forests with black alder and ash and montane spruce forests. Furthermore, riparian wood, which are often formed from black alder, can be found. The valley areas are characterized by grass lawns , mountain meadows , wet and wet meadows, extensively used grassland as well as tall herbaceous vegetation and small-scale heavy metal lawns .

The brooks are the habitat of bullhead and brook lamprey . The wildcat occurs in the nature reserve and the adjacent forests . The area is the habitat of various bats , including the pygmy bat , northern bat and water bat . Broad-leaved orchid , globe flower and arnica settle in the nature reserve .
