The Barley is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Liebenburg in the Goslar district .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 066 is 20 hectares in size. It is completely part of the FFH area "Salzgitterscher Höhenzug (southern part)" and surrounded by the landscape protection area "Salzgitterscher Höhenzug". The area has been a nature reserve since June 18, 1985. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Goslar.
The nature reserve is located east of Dörnten and southwest of Groß and Klein Döhren in the southern Salzgitter ridge . It places the former ore mine of the Barley mine, which was operated until 1967, under protection, which today is a long gorge . The pit has steep slopes and a damp, strongly chilled valley floor with numerous surface water and spring-fed small bodies of water, some of which dry out periodically. The small bodies of water are of great importance as a habitat for amphibians and dragonflies . Large parts of the pit have been reclaimed by vegetation. Semi-arid grasslands have formed on the south and west exposed slopes . These are habitats for butterflies and other insects .
