The Upper Harz is a nature reserve in the community-free area of Harz in the district of Goslar in Lower Saxony .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 006 is 164  hectares in size. It consists of two sub-areas, the " Jermerstein " in the south northwest of Braunlage and the "Kalbetal" in the north northwest of Torfhaus . Both surfaces are within the Harz Nature Park, and are directly adjacent to the Harz National Park and to the conservation area "Harz (Landkreis Goslar)". The area has been a nature reserve since April 10, 1954. It was initially 6,200 hectares and was expanded in 1958 to include areas on the Wurmberg . With the designation of the Harz National Park on January 1, 1994, large parts of the nature reserve were incorporated into it. Since October 26, 2006, additional areas have been part of the “Wurmberg” nature reserve. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Goslar.

The sub-area "Jermerstein" includes the eponymous mountain. It is characterized by several quartzite rocks from the Devonian . The rocks drop vertically to the northeast, to the southwest they taper off in steps. On the Jermerstein, near-natural beech and spruce forests grow. On the rocks there are only sparsely wilters , blueberries , lichens and mosses , occasionally beech trees and pioneer species such as birch and mountain ash .

The sub-area "Kalbetal" is characterized by forest communities, especially spruce forests.
