The Sankt-Petri-Kirche is the Protestant church in the town of Schwanebeck in Saxony-Anhalt .

Architecture and history

The predecessor of today's building was built in 1345 and was badly damaged by fire in 1674. The transverse rectangular church tower to the west of the nave with its sound openings in the form of pointed arches should still come from this previous church. In place of the destroyed church, a hall church with a rectangular floor plan in the Baroque style was built and consecrated in 1683. In this context, the old church tower was given a baroque top.

Inside the church there is a wooden barrel ceiling. There are wooden galleries on the north and west sides as well as partly on the south side . On the balustrades of the galleries there are pictures depicting scenes from the life of Jesus . The pictures were taken in 1683. An organ built in 1690 is located on the western gallery . The large wooden three-storey altarpiece with side openings dates from 1690. The column decorated top shows paintings with depictions of Luther , Melanchtons and the Last Supper . In addition, in addition to rich ornamentation , there are free figures depicting the twelve apostles . On the eastern wall of the church, behind the altar , there is a stone head, which probably originally belonged to a tomb and was built in the 16th or 17th century.

The carved pulpit also dates from around 1690 . It has niche figures that represent Christ in addition to the evangelists and the apostle Paul . On the north side there is a prieche with the coat of arms of the von Dorstadt family , which is dated to 1683. Two large baroque oil paintings date from 1692, depicting the Last Judgment and the wise and foolish virgins .

Noteworthy are the inscription tombstones for the mayor Johann Heinrich Ortlep, who died in 1695, and an epitaph for Georg Müller, who died in 1723, and his wife. In the carved frame of the epitaph there are portraits of the deceased as well as paintings depicting the crucifixion and burial . There is also a painting of the crucifixion on another epitaph.

In the church there is also a Baroque portrait of a pastor and various coats of arms from the end of the 17th century.
