geography
Athenstedt is located on the southwestern edge of the Huy ridge in the northern Harz foreland.
history
Athenstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1187. Athenstedt belonged to the Diocese of Halberstadt until 1648 and then came to the Principality of Halberstadt. The place was directly subordinate to the office of Zilly -Mulmke and came in 1815 to the administrative district of Magdeburg of the Prussian province of Saxony .
On January 1, 2010, the previously independent community of Athenstedt was incorporated into the city of Halberstadt together with the communities of Aspenstedt , Langenstein , Sargstedt and Schachdorf Ströbeck .
coat of arms
Blazon : "Square of red and silver, field 1 a golden owl, field 2 and 3 a green beech leaf, field 4 a bound golden grain yolk."
For the 800th anniversary in 1987, the municipality acquired a coat of arms, which, in its naturalistic graphics and coloring, violates the rules of heraldry. Therefore it could not be used officially.
The design of a correct coat of arms was then commissioned to the renowned heraldist Jörg Mantzsch in 2002 in order to have an officially approved coat of arms corresponding to the rules of heraldry as the municipal emblem of the place in the seal, on the flag of the municipality and in other uses .
At the municipal council meeting in September 2002, it was decided to include the following symbols in the local coat of arms, as requested by the municipality:
1.) The owl as a reference to the name Athenstedt. For generations, the inhabitants of the village have referred to Athens or the heraldic animal of the goddess Athena by their name.
2.) Beech leaves as a symbol of the closed beech population around the district
3.) Sheaf of corn in connection with agriculture.
The colors of the flag are, like the colors of Athenstadt, yellow and red.
