Langenstein is a village and district of the city of Halberstadt in the Harz district , south of Halberstadt and north of Blankenburg (Harz) , in the immediate vicinity of the federal highway 81 . The striking Hoppelberg is located southeast of the village .

The name of the village gained notoriety through the Langenstein-Zwieberge concentration camp , a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp in the years 1944–45. Langenstein is also known for the Langenstein cave dwellings , in which people lived until the 20th century.

Langenstein is five kilometers southwest of the district town of Halberstadt. The Langenstein station, Galgenhöhe, Osterholz, Untermühle and Wilhelmshöhe residential areas belong to the district of Langenstein.

Langenstein Castle

Bishop Ulrich von Halberstadt built a refuge for himself on the "long Steene" (Langenstein). The "Altenburg" existed from around 1150 to 1645. This was destroyed by the Swedes and then removed by the population. The rooms of the castle were partly caves, which were then the first of the Langenstein cave dwellings to be occupied by the population.

Maria Antonia von Branconi b. von Elsener (1746–1793), the mistress of Duke Karl von Braunschweig and acquaintance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , acquired the Langenstein estate in 1776. After her break with the duke, she had the baroque palace built between 1777 and 1783. In 1855, Oberamtmann August Wilhelm Rimpau bought the town and Langenstein Castle. He made some structural changes to the castle and had the castle park redesigned on an area of ​​around 20 hectares in the style of an English landscape park by the landscape gardener Eduard Petzold . The painting collection was temporarily supervised by Wilhelm Bode . The Rimpau family was expropriated in 1945 as part of the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone.

From 1946 Langenstein Castle was used as a healing facility. Since 1998 it has been a residential and therapy center for people with autism and Prader-Willi syndrome . The Langenstein Castle and the Castle Park are now part of the Garden Dreams Saxony-Anhalt network .

On September 30, 1928, the Langenstein manor district was merged with the Langenstein rural community. The district of Mahndorf, which was incorporated on December 1, 1973, belonged to the municipality of Langenstein until it gave up its independence. On January 1, 2010, the previously independent community of Langenstein was incorporated into the city of Halberstadt together with the communities of Athenstedt , Aspenstedt , Sargstedt and Schachdorf Ströbeck . At the same time, the village of Langenstein was built, to which the districts of Böhnshausen and Mahndorf belong.

Religions

The St. Franziskus Chapel is named after Francis of Assisi and is located on Bahnhofstrasse, it was originally Catholic and belonged to the parish of St. Burchard in Halberstadt . Due to the lower number of Catholics in the catchment area of ​​the chapel, it was sold to the Protestant parish of Halberstadt in 2019.

The Evangelical Church of St. Nikolai, built in 1888, was blown up in 1977 on the instructions of the GDR authorities. Since then, Protestant services have been held in the Protestant rectory or in the St. Francis Chapel.

In 2003 a bell tower was built in front of the Catholic chapel as an ecumenical project.
