Ulrich von Halberstadt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich von Halberstadt , Count von Reinstein, (born before 1133; died on July 30, 1180 in the Huysburg Monastery ) was Bishop of Halberstadt from 1150 to 1160 and again from 1177 to 1180 .

Life

Ulrich was dean of the episcopal church and provost at the Liebfrauenstift in Halberstadt from 1133 to 1150 and was consecrated bishop by Archbishop Heinrich I in 1150, after the death of Bishop Rudolph I on October 6, 1149 . He sponsored the monasteries of the Augustinian canons and in 1153 he prevailed against an uprising by the citizens of Halberstadt. In 1154 Frederick I withdrew his regalia because he refused to take part in the 1st Italian train . In 1156 these were awarded to him again.

Ulrich allied himself with the Margrave Albrecht the Bear in order to counter the growing influence of the Guelph dukes. The margrave had this alliance recorded on one of his coinage, on the bracteate both are shown side by side. Together with him and his wife Margravine Sophia von Brandenburg he went on a pilgrimage to the promised land in February 1158. In 1160 he was deposed as bishop because he was a supporter of Pope Alexander III. was. The Saxon Duke Heinrich the Lion was instrumental in his deposition and banishment. Between 1164 and 1168 Ulrich stayed in the Archdiocese of Salzburg . By the "Treaty of Anagni" in 1176, Alexander III. Ulrich returns to his office as bishop. He immediately reclaimed the fiefs that Bishop Gero had given Heinrich the Lion in the meantime and declared the ordinations made by Gero invalid. Heinrich refused to return the goods, so Ulrich imposed a ban on the duke. He then had the episcopal Hornburg destroyed, invaded the diocese in 1179, took Ulrich prisoner and had Halberstadt burned down on September 23, 1179. After his release, for which he had to give the duke the fiefs in Halberstadt and release the ban, Ulrich tried to consolidate the economic power of the diocese.

Act

  • In 1154 he had Langenstein Castle built in Halberstadt.
  • In 1158 he consecrated the newly built church of St. Aegidien in Rautheim.
  • In 1178 he had the fortress rebuilt in Hornburg in order to send troops from there and from Halberstadt against Heinrich the Lion or to carry out raids on his possessions.
