from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gero von Halberstadt was Bishop of Halberstadt from 1160 to 1177 .

Life

Gero came from the noblemen of Schermcke . He came into office, according to a document by Albrecht the Bear , in the second half of 1160, after his predecessor Ulrich had not participated in the emperor's Italian campaign. Before that he was provost at Halberstadt Cathedral . When Gero took office, the diocese was in a partially devastated condition due to the imperial journey against Henry the Lion . In 1162 he stayed with Frederick I in Pavia . He brought relics of Saints Gervasius and Protasius with him from Milan . The emperor also gave him the right to mint coins for his diocese. In 1163 he held a synod to regulate internal conditions in the diocese . In 1168 he took part in the Reichstag in Würzburg. In 1173 he confirmed donations that Ministeriale made to Hamersleben monastery . During his term of office there was also friction with the Quedlinburg Abbey , because it had already been preferred by previous kings and protected from access by the Halberstadt diocese in favor of bailiffs. The Pope, however, confirmed the abbess's prerogatives over the bishop. In 1177 the peace treaty of Venice led to the fact that, like others who had been on the side of the schism, he was banished and deposed.
