history

Railway cut near Derenburg (2020)

The Langenstein – Derenburg line was opened on September 9, 1880 by the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway (HBE). The local sugar factory in Derenburg was to be connected with the short branch line.

The extension to Minsleben - and thus a connection to the local sugar factory and the Heudeber-Danstedt – Bad Harzburg state railway - was opened on October 31, 1900. The HBE, which is heavily dependent on the mining industry, promised a large increase in traffic on the Blankenburg – Wernigerode connection without the detour via Halberstadt and thus secure income. However, the operating result remained well below expectations. As early as 1919, passenger traffic on the Derenburg – Minsleben section was stopped. In freight traffic, only the route to the Minsleben sugar factory was served, the connection to the state railway was omitted. On May 1, 1922, goods traffic between Derenburg and the Minsleben sugar factory was stopped.

The remaining section of the route came to the Sächsische Provinzialbahnen in 1946 , then to the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1949 . On November 15, 1968, traffic was stopped and the line was then dismantled.
