The Halberstadt sausages and canned Vertriebs GmbH is a manufacturer of meat and sausages as well as soups and ready meals in Halberstadt . The company in 1883 was founded by Friedrich Heine , initially under the name Heine & Co . In 1896, Heine & Co. was the first company in the world to offer scalded sausages in tins , making it the inventor of canned sausage . Heine died in 1929 and the company was converted into a stock corporation. In 1948 the former owners were expropriated and the company was continued in the GDR under the name VENAG , VEB Halberstädter Fleischwaren since 1954 . The products were considered to be merchandise and were extremely popular. In the course of German reunification , the corporate form changed again to a GmbH . In 1992 it was taken over by the merchant and butcher Ulrich Nitsch from Lehrte and is now run by his daughter. 1995–1999 the plant was renovated in three steps. In 2003 it was converted into a GmbH & Co. KG; New name: Halberstädter Würstchen und Konservenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG .

Since the company was founded, the focus of the product range has been boiled sausages such as bockwurst in cans and glasses. Today, however, soups, stews , canned meat and ready meals as well as fresh products such as sausages are also on offer.

The production facility in Halberstadt is a listed building and can be visited after registration. Affiliated with the family business are the four-star S-Hotel Villa Heine (since 1999), which is housed in the renovated founder's villa, the Waldhotel Humboldt in Salzhemmendorf (Lower Saxony) and the brewery Brauhaus Heine .

The smoky taste of Halberstädter sausages is achieved through the patented "chimney smoking" with beech wood fire and the long maturation times of 24 to 36 hours. Since 1913, the product has received several awards from the German Agricultural Society (DLG) , and further gold medals have been added since reunification. At Stiftung Warentest , Halberstadt Vienna sausages and a competing product were rated as test winners in an evaluation in 2009 . Also from Öko-Test were Halberstadt Wiener rated "very good" with the overall assessment.

Halberstadt sausages are under since a decision in October 2010 Name Protection of the European Union. These products from the Halberstadt sausage and canning factory have been allowed to carry the EU seal “ Protected Geographical Indication ” since October 28, 2010 , meaning that only products that are manufactured in Halberstadt may carry the adjective “Halberstädter”.

The annual production of Halberstadt sausages is 1200 tons. Halberstädter are the market leader for sausages in East Germany with 30 percent.
