The Stendal – Tangermünde railway is a branch line in Saxony-Anhalt. It leads from the Stendal railway junction in the Altmark to Tangermünde on the Elbe. It was built and operated by the Stendal-Tangermünder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, founded in 1884 .

history

Seal of the Stendal-Tangermünder Railway Company

The main shareholders of the Stendal-Tangermünder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft were the city of Tangermünde with 51 percent and the local sugar refinery with 39 percent of the capital. This relationship did not change significantly until 1946/47. Then the Province of Saxony took over the railway and incorporated it into the Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH . In April 1949 it became part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and is now part of the Deutsche Bahn AG .

Class 670 double-decker railcars formerly used on the route

The ten-kilometer standard-gauge line was opened for freight traffic on April 1, 1886 and a few days later, on April 7, for passenger traffic. Initially, five to eight pairs of trains were offered daily. It is only recently that the number of journeys has more than doubled since the route has been offered an hourly service. Initially, double-decker railcars of the 670 series were used for a few years , but these were replaced by the Siemens Desiro Classic , run as the 642 series .

Two connecting lines to the Elbe harbor and the sugar factory were built in Tangermünde for the once important freight traffic. This loading point was listed in the station directory and in the route directory as Tangermünde loading points on the banks of the Elbe and the port . Freight traffic has not been offered since the end of 1997. The line to the Elbhafen was dismantled.

Current operation

In the last tender for the transport service for the route by the Saxony-Anhalt local transport service (NASA), the Hanseatic Railway emerged as the winner. The company, which belongs to Deutsche Eisenbahn Service AG (DESAG), has been using the line with the "HANS" brand and class 640 diesel multiple units ( Alstom Coradia LINT ) since December 2018.

Lore

The tradition of the Stendal-Tangermünder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft is in the Dessau department of the Saxony-Anhalt State Archives .
