The 670 series is a double-decker railcar with a diesel engine drive. It was built by the Dessau and Halle-Ammendorf plants of Deutsche Waggonbau AG (DWA) at the request of Deutsche Bahn . It is biaxial and contains parts from bus construction.
development
The vehicle frame was made of lightweight steel construction; Glued on, galvanized sheets form the outer skin. The vehicle heads are made of glass fiber reinforced plastic. There is a sliding door on both sides, inside two spiral staircases connect the two levels.
A first prototype , also known as a “demonstrator”, was presented to the public in autumn 1994 and at the Innotrans trade fair in October 1996 in Berlin. The "Demonstrator" was painted completely in red, had the road number 670 000 and, unlike the six series vehicles, was never approved for passenger traffic .
history
Six more cars were built, which were mainly used in Thuringia , Saxony-Anhalt and Rhineland-Palatinate from 1996 onwards. Problems with the air conditioning and engine cooling occurred during operation, and the lack of toilets also had a negative impact. The six series vehicles were initially white with a red trim (similar to the ICE ), later painted in traffic red with a white trim. A seventh vehicle was scrapped in the factory as a body shell. Due to the many problems of the first series and discrepancies between the manufacturer and Deutsche Bahn , the planned successor series 670.1 was no longer built.
The six series vehicles were used on the Weimar – Kranichfeld route , the Moselweinbahn and the Trier – Perl route , and later on the Stendal – Tangermünde route .
The railcars 670 002 and 005 were in use from June 1996 on the Bullay – Traben-Trarbach route . Popular with excursion passengers, they were soon withdrawn from the route due to their susceptibility to damage (especially hot runners were more common). A deployment on the Upper Moselle route Trier – Perl from September 1996 was also unsuccessful, as the vehicles were too small, especially for school traffic , and also had no toilet.
Operations in Thuringia were also soon stopped. On the Stendal – Tangermünde railway line, vehicle 670 002 was used until March 2003, the only successful use of this series, then the failure- prone vehicles were replaced by a much older combination of series 772/972 .
Most of the Deutsche Bahn vehicles were returned to the manufacturer in 2001; since 1998 this has been Bombardier Transportation . He worked on the vehicles and sold them on.
Three vehicles came to the Dessau-Wörlitz Railway . These are vehicles 670 002 ("Alma", spare parts dispenser), 005 and 006. One of them, 670 002, was later owned by the Anhaltische Bahn Gesellschaft and was up for auction on February 25, 2011. The vehicles are used on the Dessau – Wörlitz route. However, since the vehicles were not operational for a long time, operations on the route were suspended for about nine months. As a substitute, buses were therefore used in the rail replacement service. On June 19, 2011, operations on the line were resumed with the repaired and redesigned motor car 670 005 “Fürst Franz”. The "Fürst Franz" car parked in 2017 due to a defective hydraulic system serves as a spare parts dispenser for 670 006 - instead of the 670 series, three vehicles from the 672 series are to be taken over by the Burgenland Railway. The railcar 670 006 "Fürstin Louise" is to receive a new general inspection at the beginning of 2020 and will be kept for special trips and as a reserve.
The Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH owned the remaining three vehicles 670 001, 003 and 004. The vehicles 670 003 and 004 later switched to the Potsdam Railway Company and have been in use again on routes in Prignitz since 2009.
The prototype, 670,000 (red “demonstrator”) was owned by the Traditionsgemeinschaft Ferkeltaxi eV association and has since been sold to a private person in Oelsnitz. The 670 002 is now owned by the Traditionsgemeinschaft Ferkeltaxi e. V., with which special trips are carried out.
