House with a chapel

The Christ König chapel is the Catholic church in Arendsee , a town in the Altmark district of Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish " St. Laurentius " with its seat in Salzwedel , in the deanery of Stendal, and is the northernmost church in the diocese of Magdeburg . The chapel bears the patronage of Jesus as Christ the King (Rex Christ) and is located in a residential building on Lindenstrasse, only about 150 meters from the shore of the Arendsee .

history

With the introduction of the Reformation in the 16th century, the population in the Altmark also became Evangelical-Lutheran . It was not until the 19th century, when the demand for labor increased, that more Catholics moved to the Altmark again. Most of them came from Eichsfeld , Silesia and Poland .

In 1934, the pastor of Salzwedel, Josef Speckenmeier, had a house with a chapel built in Arendsee, in what was then Schützenstrasse 2. At that time, Arendsee belonged to the parish of Salzwedel in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

In August 1946, Pastor Jambor, the first local priest, settled at the chapel. On November 1, 1947, a Catholic Kuratiegemeinde was set up in Arendsee ; it comprised 28 villages with around 1500 Catholics. Most of them were refugees and displaced persons who had settled in the region around the Arendsee after the Second World War . In 1966/67 a bungalow was built on the property as a community center.

Since the last local priest, Bruno Knoche (1929–2012), retired on May 31, 1994, the chapel has again been looked after by the pastor from Salzwedel. On July 8, 1994 the diocese of Magdeburg was founded, to which Arendsee belongs from then on. On October 1st, 2006 the association of municipalities "Salzwedel- Apenburg -Arendsee- Dähre " was founded, which on May 2nd, 2010 was merged into a parish. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that 265 of the 7,280 inhabitants of the city of Arendsee, or just under 4%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.
