St. John's Church (Arendsee)
The Sankt-Johannes-Kirche is a Protestant church in the town of Arendsee in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located immediately south of the town hall and belongs to the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
History and architecture
At first, apart from the monastery church to the west, Arendsee also had a chapel built around 1381, which, however, burned down in 1831. The new building of today's church was based on a design by the district architect Gerlhoff from Osterburg in 1881 and 1882.
The result was a brick-built hall church with a rectangular floor plan. The base of the building consists of granite blocks . On the west side, the church tower rises on a square floor plan with four gables and an octagonal helmet. To the east of the ship is a semicircular apse . The church shows itself simply in the round arch style .
The interior of the church is spanned by a flat ceiling. However, the tower has a groin vault in the basement and the apse has a semi-dome. The wooden furniture is simple and comes from the construction period. The interior of the church is cautiously painted with ornaments . These paintings were restored in 1983.
The baptism is designed in the neo-Romanesque style and made of cast metal. It is partly gilded or bronzed. The organ of the church was built in 1883 by Carl Böttcher from Magdeburg . It has a richly designed organ in the neo-renaissance style .
