From December 4, 1973 to December 31, 1978, the Greater Braunschweig Association existed as a predecessor association . Members were the districts of Braunschweig (until its dissolution), Gifhorn , Helmstedt , Peine and Wolfenbüttel as well as the independent cities of Braunschweig , Salzgitter and Wolfsburg . At that time there was a political association assembly, the members of which were elected by the city councils or district assemblies involved.

The top management elected on February 7, 1974 consisted of the member of the state parliament Bernhard Ließ , the legal assistant Jürgen Bräcklein and the technical assistant Reinhold Oertwig .

The association had roughly the same tasks as the resulting special purpose association for the greater Braunschweig area . On March 22, 2017, this was further developed into the regional association for the greater Braunschweig area . This is accompanied by an expansion of the scope of duties.
