Hennig Brandes , also Henning Brandes (* 5. May 1958 in Braunschweig ) is German CDU - politician and was from 2003 to 2010 the parliament of Lower Saxony on. Since March 2010 he has been the association director of the municipal special purpose association for the greater Braunschweig area .

Life

Hennig Brandes did his Abitur at the New High School Braunschweig . He then studied forest science at the University of Göttingen , obtained a forestry diploma and, after passing the state examination, entered the higher administrative service of Lower Saxony. He lives in the Braunschweig district of Querum .

At the Federal Research Institute for Forestry and Wood Management in Hamburg , he dealt with the research project: "Energetic use of forest wood". Afterwards Brandes was laboratory manager at the Lower Saxony Forest Research Institute in the forest protection department in Göttingen . He then became head of the Lower Saxony forestry office in Danndorf and head of the Braunschweig district government .

He is honorary chairman of the Braunschweig Hunters' Association and is active in the working group of associations and corporations in the Querum district , in the volunteer fire brigade , in the Braunschweig Alte Wiek Lions Club and is involved in animal welfare in Braunschweig.

In 1996 Brandes joined the CDU and has been active for it ever since. He sits in the council of the city of Braunschweig, is a member of the parliamentary committee and chairman of the building committee. In the local elections in 2011, Hennig Brandes achieved the best result of all council candidates with 3,140 votes. In the water association Mittlere Oker he is the head of the association, in privatized companies performing municipal tasks he has functions as a member of the supervisory board or advisory board.

In the Zweckverband Großraum Braunschweig (ZGB) he was a member of the association assembly and chairman of the committee for regional planning and has been its association director since 15 March 2010 after the election by the association assembly on February 11th. After completion of the “RegioStadtBahn” project at the end of 2010, which had a planning lead of ten years, the implementation of the “Regionalbahn Concept 2014+” is his most important task. The concept is based on conventional local rail passenger transport (SPNV) with good transfer options between rail, light rail and bus. The planned offer is based on hourly intervals on all routes. The aim is a balanced regional rail transport offer for the entire association area, meaningful networking with local public transport and coordination of the regional rail transport offer beyond the association's area with the neighboring authorities.

He was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament - in the 15th electoral period from 2003 and until his retirement on March 16, 2010 in the 16th electoral term - as a directly elected member of the Braunschweig-Nord constituency . As a member of the state parliament, he was active in the following committees in the 16th electoral term: Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Science and Culture , Member of the Committee for Environment and Climate Protection and Deputy Member of the Committee for Economy, Labor and Transport , the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection and regional development and in the data protection commission . In the 15th term, Brandes served on the Environment Committee and was an alternate member of the Budget and Finance Committee .

On November 29, 2013, Brandes was elected mayor candidate of the Braunschweig CDU with 96% of the vote at a party congress. On May 25, 2014 Brandes stood as the CDU candidate for the office of Lord Mayor of Braunschweig . He reached the runoff election and then lost the election on June 15, 2014 against the SPD candidate Ulrich Markurth . Brandes is now continuing his work as the association director of the special purpose association for the greater Braunschweig area until his term of office ends after eight years in February 2018. In addition to his main office, Brandes is also councilor of the city of Braunschweig. However, he is resigning from this office on October 21, 2014.
