The Barleber See is located in the north of Magdeburg . It is located between the Federal Highway 2 and the Mittelland Canal in the Barleber See district and is named after the nearby town of Barleben in the Börde district.
The lake was created between 1928 and 1937 through gravel dredging during the construction of the motorway and the Mittelland Canal. It is about 103 hectares . Its greatest depth is 11 m and its average depth is 6.7 m. It is a polymictic and mesotrophic body of water in which visibility depths of up to 7.50 m have been measured. Eutrophication , partly due to bathing, leads to increased anthropogenic phosphate input and the occasional mass multiplication of cyanobacteria . In 1986 the amount of phosphate available for algae was greatly reduced through precipitation . Occurrences of eel , bream , pike , carp and roach are known.
Fully developed for tourism (gastronomy, lifeguards, boat rental, (permanent) campsite), one of the most famous local recreation areas for the residents of Magdeburg has emerged here.
The Barleber See stop is located on the Magdeburg – Wittenberge railway line , around 500 m from the south bank of Barleber See I. The station can be reached via the Buschweg. It is served from May to October by the S1 line of the Mittelelbe S-Bahn . The terminus Barleber See of the Magdeburg tram is about 1 km from the south bank.
A little to the east is the Barleber See II, also created by gravel mining .
