The Barleber See II is located immediately east of the Barleber See I in the north of Magdeburg . It was created through gravel mining , which was carried out until the mid-1990s. The lake has neither an inflow nor an outflow above ground and is only connected to the groundwater . It is approximately triangular in shape with rounded corners and extends about 1.2 km in north-south direction and about 1 km in east-west direction. To the north-east of the lake, only separated by a strip of land almost 150 m wide, runs the Rothenseer connecting canal , to the north the Mittelland Canal , and to the south-east the Federal Motorway 2 . The shoreline of the lake is considered to be the lowest point in the Magdeburg urban area.

Flora and fauna

As long as the gravel was extracted, the existing phosphates were precipitated by clay minerals in the gravel washing water, so that in 1994 the lake was considered to be mesotrophic . As recently as 1999, only a few species of phytoplankton appeared, but together with hydrological detritus they served as food for a greater variety of zooplankton species .

The surroundings of the Barleber Lakes are used as a habitat for red- backed killer , barber warbler , bittern and bittern . Here it also breeds the marsh harrier , and occurrence of the black woodpecker are known.

use

Since the banks in the east and south are navigable, the lake is used for bathing and windsurfing, although bathing is officially prohibited. By driving almost to the edge of the water, the bank vegetation was destroyed and the banks were heavily polluted. With the construction of the Rothensee lock from 1997 to 2001, a bank profiling at Barleber See II was connected, in which shallow water zones with spawning areas for fish were created.
