The Münster – Hamm railway is a nearly 36-kilometer long, double-track and electrified main railway line from Münster to Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia , which was built by the Münster-Hammer Railway Company (MHE), which was founded for this very purpose . 17,000 travelers use the trains that run on the railway line every day.

history

The Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (CME) deliberately chose the route of its main line straight through Westphalia , literally ignoring the city of Münster, which is important for the region.

In order not to be completely cut off from rail traffic, the MHE was founded, which was supposed to build a branch line to the line of the CME. This line was opened on May 26, 1848 for passenger traffic and on July 8, 1848 also for goods traffic (according to, according to reverse dating).

As early as 1855, the Königlich-Westfälische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (KWE), financed by the Prussian state , took over both the company and its line, which it continued to build to Rheine the following year .

In the past, individual Intercity trains also used the route, today they take the route via the Preußen – Münster railway line , which is why the route is of more regional importance in western Westphalia and southern Münsterland:

It drives

  • the Rhein-Münsterland-Express (RE 7) with stops in Hamm, Drensteinfurt, Münster-Hiltrup and Münster Hbf every hour .
  • Monday to Friday every half hour during the day, otherwise every hour the Ems-Börde-Bahn (RB 69/89) with stops at all train stations along the route.

Due to a new tourist offer by Deutsche Bahn after the corona pandemic, an ICE couple will be traveling on the route from Munich to Norddeich-Mole from Friday to Monday in the summer of 2020.

The price for a single ticket in regional transport costs 9.50 euros for an adult (VGM tariff, as of January 2015). By booking a longer route (e.g. Dortmund to Münster via Hamm), cheaper tariffs may arise.

Planning

The Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) presented the concept of a possible S-Bahn Münsterland in November 2019. This provides for the conversion of the RB 89 into a half-hourly S-Bahn line, which also stops in Münster Preußenstadion and continues to Münster Zentrum Nord. Between Münster Zentrum Nord and Münster-Hiltrup, a 15-minute cycle is to be offered by combining it with a half-hourly S-Bahn line from Rheine. In addition to the S-Bahn, another RE line is planned so that the RE lines run every half hour between Münster and Hamm. A connection to Zwolle and Düsseldorf is planned for the RE line.
