The Hiltruper See , as after his first tenant Steiner lake called, is an incurred by sand mining lake south of Münster in Hiltrup . It is located directly on the Münsterländer gravel train . In the south and east the forest area of the High Ward joins. The new route of the Dortmund-Ems Canal runs north of the lake .

The construction of the lake began in 1913/14 with the extraction of sand, which was mainly needed for the construction of the Prussia – Münster railway line between Münster and Capelle. From 1920 the Hiltruper See was leased for the first time by the Dortmund factory owner Steiner, who ran a trout farm until 1925/26 . However, sand continued to be extracted from the lake until 1967. Because of the importance of the gravel-sand draft for the drinking water production of the Stadtwerke Münster , the sand mining was stopped.

The entire gravel sand train from the old route of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in the northwest to the floodplain of the Werse at the southeast end of the Hohen Ward has been designated as a water protection area since 1963 . Since then, a bathing ban has been in effect at Hiltruper See, although an official bathing establishment was operated up to that point. Nevertheless, the Hiltruper See with its surroundings is one of the most popular local recreation areas in Münster, which is accessible through numerous riding and hiking trails. The Hiltruper See is also accessible through the " Hohe Ward nature trail ". The starting point is at the parking lot on the “Zum Hiltruper See” street near Westfalenstraße.

An outdoor swimming pool, a sailing club, a tennis facility and a hotel have been located on the north and north-west banks since 1968.
