The Alba Iulia – Zlatna railway is a branch line in Romania . It runs mainly in the valley of the Ampoi River on the southern edge of the Trascău Mountains in western Transylvania .

history

The railway line from Alba Iulia to Zlatna was put into operation in 1895 as a narrow-gauge railway. In 1984 this was replaced by a standard gauge railway. Since the original route ran through the city center of Alba Iulia (with the stops Alba Iulia Cetate and Miceşti ) and the laying of a standard gauge was not possible there, the Alba Iulia – Târgu Mureş railway line near the village of Bărăbanț was connected to the original route made at Bahnhofard - Ighiu station . This increased the route by approx. 4 km.

Todays situation

The line is single-track. It was taken over in 2006 by the private company Regiotrans . There are currently (2018) four passenger trains running in each direction every day.
