The Ampoi or Ompoi ( Hungarian Ompoly ) is a right tributary of the Mureș ( Mieresch ) in the southwest of the Transylvanian Basin in Romania .

The river is also known by the outdated names Ampeie and Ampee .

River course

The Ampoi rises in the northeast of the Transylvanian Ore Mountains - a mountain range of the Apuseni Mountains -, southwest of the Petriceaua summit ( 1142  m above sea level ), in the west of the Alba district . On the upper reaches, between the Transylvanian Ore Mountains (in the west) and the Trascău Mountains (in the east), the Ampoi flows in the area of the small town of Zlatna ( Kleinschlatten ) over a length of about 26 kilometers in a south-easterly direction. South of the Trascau Mountains, the Ampoi flows mainly in an easterly direction and flows into the Mureș at Bărăbanț - an incorporated village of the city of Alba Iulia - after about 60 kilometers. The river has a catchment area of approx. 580 km².
