Markus Lewe
Markus Wilhelm Lewe (born March 27, 1965 in Münster ) is a German local politician ( CDU ) and has been Lord Mayor of the city of Münster since 2009 .
Life
Markus Lewe finished his school education at the Ratsgymnasium in Münster with the Abitur. After completing his military service, he began to study administrative sciences , which he completed in 1989 with a degree in administrative management (FH) .
After completing his studies, Lewe worked for the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association . He then took on a position as auditor in the diocese of Münster and rose to head of the controlling department and head of organizational development in the diocese. He is married and has five children.
In 1999 Lewe was elected district mayor of the Münster-Süd-Ost district. A re-election followed in 2004. In 2007 Lewe took over the party chairmanship of the CDU district association of Münster. After Mayor Berthold Tillmann announced that he would not run again in the local elections in 2009 , Lewe was elected CDU candidate for the mayoral election in Münster on March 13, 2008. In the local elections on August 30, 2009, he prevailed against Wolfgang Heuer from the SPD and was elected Lord Mayor of Münster as successor to Berthold Tillmann with 49.48% of all votes. He took over the office on October 21, 2009 and subsequently resigned from the CDU district chairmanship.
In the subsequent mayoral election on September 13, 2015, Markus Lewe was again nominated as a candidate by the CDU and was able to defeat SPD candidate Jochen Köhnke (23.81%) and his challenger in the first ballot with 50.59 percent of the votes cast by the Greens Maria Klein-Schmeink (20.77%).
In addition to his position as Lord Mayor, Lewe is also a member of the supervisory board of Münster / Osnabrück Airport . In 2015 Lewe was awarded the Muhammad Nafi Tschelebi Prize .
Lewe has been a member of the Presidium of the German Association of Cities since 2013 and a member of the ZDF Television Council as a representative of the German Association of Cities since July 8, 2016 . On January 1, 2018, Lewe took over the presidency of the German Association of Cities at the suggestion of the CDU and CSU . He thus succeeded Eva Lohse ( Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) in the management of the municipal umbrella association . As President of the City Council, in view of the housing shortage and rapidly rising rents, he called for the construction of 400,000 apartments a year in Germany, including 120,000 social housing. Burkhard Jung , Lord Mayor of Leipzig , was elected as his successor on June 6, 2019 . Lewe has been Vice President of the City Council since then.
On February 29, 2020, Lewe was elected candidate for the mayoral election on September 13, 2020 with 97 percent of the votes at a CDU party convention in the cafeteria at Coesfelder Kreuz .
