Kennebec County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The county seat is in Augusta .

According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 2,247 square kilometers. Of these, 217 square kilometers, or 8.79 percent, are water areas. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Somerset County , Waldo County , Sagadahoc County , Lincoln County , Androscoggin County, and Franklin County .

Eight sites in the county have the status of a National Historic Landmark due to their historical significance . A total of 124 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 11, 2017).

The county had 117,114 people as of the 2000 census . There were 47,683 households and 31,327 families. The population density was 52 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.45% White, 0.34% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.18% other races Groups; 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73% of the population.
Of the 47,683 households, 31.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.60% were married couples living together, 10.00% were single mothers. 34.30% were not families. 27.60% were single households and 10.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.80% residents under 18 years of age, 8.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,498 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,814. Males had a median income of $ 32,279 versus $ 24,032 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,520. 11.10% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. 13.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 10.20% were 65 years of age or older.
