history

Monmouth was an Indian settlement area even before European settlers reached the area. The first European settlers reached the area in the winter of 1777. The area was part of the land grant of the Plymouth Patent. The early settlers also included the future politician John Chandler, who settled as a blacksmith in Monmouth, graduated from high school and later was a member of the Massachusetts General Court and the US Senate.

The Town of Monmouth was organized from the Wales Plantation on January 20, 1792. Previously the area was called Freetown Plantation, then Bloomingboro Plantation, and around 1780 Wales Plantation. In 1809 land was given to Leeds, in 1813 to Winthrop and in 1855 to Wales.

Cumston Hall is home to the Monmouth Shakespearean Theater. William Shakespeare's plays are regularly performed here. The building was built on a donation from Charles M. Cumston.
