Fayette was settled from 1779. The land grant for the area was given to Robert Page and colleagues from the state of Massachusetts. Initially, the area was named Starling Plantation . Fayette was organized to the town on February 28, 1795 and the name came from the French officer Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , who had taken part in the American Revolutionary War on the side of the Americans .

In 1802, areas were given to neighboring Mount Vernon.
