Winthrop is a town in Kennebec County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 6,092 inhabitants in 3,295 households on an area of 98.16 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Winthrop has a total area of 98.16 km², of which 80.86 km² is land and 17.30 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Winthrop is located in the southwest of Kennebec County. Cobbosseecontee Lake is adjacent to the east . In the north, the Maranacook Lake and in the south, the Annabessacook Lake protrudes into the area of the town. In the west, the Wilson and Berry Pond border. There are other smaller lakes in the Winthrop area. The surface is slightly hilly, the highest point is Mount Pisgah , which is 249 m high .

history
Winthrop was initially called Plantation Pondtown . Pondtown was part of the Kennebec Purchase from Governor Bradford's Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. Settlement in the area began in 1765. Timothy Foster was the first settler. As a town, Winthrop was organized on April 26, 1791 and the name was changed to Winthrop after John Winthrop, Jr. , the first governor of Massachusetts. Until 1791 Readfield belonged to the area of the town. Winthrop was represented in the General Court as early as 1783. A post office was established in 1800 and the Winthrop Woolen Company was founded in 1809. Further businesses settled in the village of Winthrop.

Economy and Infrastructure

The US Highway 202 runs from southwest to northeast through Winthrop Winthrop and connects with Green in the southwest and Augusta in the northeast. The Maine State Route 136 runs in a north-south direction by the eastern Town, parallel to the western shore of Cobbosseecontee Lakes. Maine State Route 133 branches off from the highway in a north-westerly direction, the route of which is partially congruent with Maine State Route 41, which runs northwards .
The Cumberland Center – Bangor freight railway runs through Winthrop. As early as 1849, Winthrop was connected to the railway network by the now closed Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad . In 1902 the tram reached Augusta Winthrop.
Public facilities
There are several rehabilitation facilities in Winthrop. Further medical facilities and hospitals are located in Augusta.
The CM Bailey Public Library is located in Winthrop . It was founded on July 8, 1889. It was originally located in Downtown Winthrop and at the time of its founding had a collection of 1,322 volumes. A donation from Charles M. Bailey enabled a new building to be built at the beginning of the 20th century, which was opened on December 2, 1916.

Winthrop Public Schools is responsible for school education in Winthrop .
