history

Winthrop was initially called Plantation Pondtown . Pondtown was part of the Kennebec Purchase from Governor Bradford's Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. Settlement in the area began in 1765. Timothy Foster was the first settler. As a town, Winthrop was organized on April 26, 1791 and the name was changed to Winthrop after John Winthrop, Jr. , the first governor of Massachusetts. Until 1791 Readfield belonged to the area of ​​the town. Winthrop was represented in the General Court as early as 1783. A post office was established in 1800 and the Winthrop Woolen Company was founded in 1809. Further businesses settled in the village of Winthrop.

The US Highway 202 runs from southwest to northeast through Winthrop Winthrop and connects with Green in the southwest and Augusta in the northeast.
