Randolph initially belonged to the Town of Pittston, which was organized in 1779 and previously known as Gardinerston Plantation . On March 4, 1887 Randolph was organized independently as a town under the name West Pittston . After just two weeks, the name was renamed in honor of Peyton Randolph after Randolph in Massachusetts. Randolph was a personal friend of George Washington .
