Life

Origin and family

Hermann Otto von Westerholt zu Westerholt and Alst grew up as the son of Bernhard von Westerholt zu Hackfort and Sophia Elisabeth von Westerholt (1620–1638, heir) with his siblings Hermann Goswin (* 1634, Canon in Osnabrück), Jakob Wilhelm (* 1627, Jesuit, ordained priest in 1622) and Burckhardt Wilhelm in an ancient Westphalian aristocratic family . The parents lost their lives in November 1638 in the battle for Vechta.

In 1655 he married the imperial free woman Anna Elisabeth Sybilla von Westerholt zu Westerholt (1630–1670), a second cousin, with papal dispensation . She was the daughter of Niclas von Westerholt and his wife Anna von der Recke zu Steinfurt , heiress in Westerholt. With this he founded the Westerholt to Westerholt line. The sons Bernhard Heinrich Burckhardt and Dietrich Hermann (* 1661, canon in Münster and Halberstadt) come from this marriage . He concluded his second marriage on March 15, 1670 in Schonebeck with Anna Elisabeth Sibylle von Brabeck zu Brabeck († September 26, 1676, mother-in-law of his son Bernhard Heinrich Burckhardt), the third marriage on August 9, 1676 in Osnabrück with Catharina Margaretha von Ledebur zu Quernheim († 1681). This marriage brought about the son Gregor Theodor (* 1680). After all, his fourth marriage was to the middle-class Adelheid zum Sande.
