Frederick Alton Powers (born June 19, 1855 in Pittsfield , Maine , † February 13, 1923 in Saint Petersburg , Florida ) was an American lawyer and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1893 to 1896 .

Life

Frederick Alton Powers was born in West Pittsfield, the youngest son of Arba Powers and Naomi Mathews. He attended local schools and graduated from the Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield in 1871. He then studied at Bowdoin College, where he graduated in 1875. He worked and studied with his brother Llewellyn Powers in Houlton . He was admitted to the bar in 1876. He then became a partner in the law firm of his brothers Llewellyn and Don Arba Horace Powers, until his appointment as judge on the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine in 1891. He resigned in 1907 back.

A member of the Republican Party , Powers was a member of the Maine Senate from 1885 to 1888 and the Maine House of Representatives from 1891 to 1892 , and was Maine Attorney General from 1893 to 1896.

Since 1921 he was a trustee of Bowdoin College; from 1908 to 1921 he was one of the college's overseers.

Frederick A. Powers first married Mary Houlton. With her he had two sons. After the death of Mary Powers in 1901, he was second married to Virginia Hewes. This marriage remained childless. His brother Llewellyn Powers was Governor of Maine from 1897 to 1901. Powers died on February 13, 1923 in Saint Petersburg, Florida. His grave is in Tilton Corner Cemetery in Pittsfield.
