Orville D. Baker

Orville Dewey Baker (born December 23, 1847 in Augusta , Maine , † August 16, 1908 ) was an American lawyer and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1885 to 1888 .

Life

Orville Dewey Baker was born in Augusta, Maine in 1847 to Joseph Baker and Frances G Rogers. His father was also a lawyer. Baker completed his training at Bowdoin College and graduated in 1868. He worked for his father and then attended Harvard Law School , from which he graduated with honors in 1872. In the same year he was admitted to the bar.

In 1883 he was admitted to the United States Supreme Court . As a member of the Republican Party , he was Maine Attorney General from 1885 to 1888. During his tenure, led several significant lawsuits in Maine law enforcement. He has served as legal advisor to the Maine Central Railroad , Boston and Maine Railroad , Western Union Telephone Company, Hallowell Granite Works, and other major Maine stone, forest and water companies. At the time of his sudden death, he was the chairman of the Maine Bar Association.

Baker wasn't married. He died on August 16, 1908. His grave is in Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta.
